Vintage Lace Garters by Garland & Garter: Tuesday CRUSH
Posted 189 days ago
Happy Tuesday folks!
Today we are ALL about wedding garters. Traditionally removed by the groom and tossed to guests (apparently to prevent them grabbing it themselves – how rude!!) many brides now opt to keep their garters as a keepsake or heirloom to hand down to their own daughters on their wedding day.
In the search for unique businesses for our site, we came upon the lovely Emma Garland at the Harrogate Vintage Wedding Fair earlier this year, who had just started her new garter business - Garland & Garter.
Emma’s garters are unique, luxurious and very, very pretty so come and see for yourself!

Emma tells us:
“I’m the founder and creator of Garland & Garter, a business dedicated to creating truly unique and luxurious handmade garters using delicate vintage lace, soft satin ribbons and beautiful jewels. Our garters are individually designed, which makes each and every one unique, making a really special gift.
The business came about over a year ago, when I wanted to buy my best friend a really luxurious garter for her wedding day. I wanted to spend about £50 for a garter that she could keep that was really special.
Whilst there are an abundance of garters available online, they are often poorly made and use cheap materials and fabric, so I set about making my own.
I picked up some beautiful ivory vintage lace from a local antiques shop and layered it upon soft satin ivory ribbons. I then finished it off with a pearl droplet and a large satin and lace bow. My best friend was over the moon with it and other friends were asking me to make them so soon after Garland & Garter was born.
Garland & Garter designs beautiful, handmade garters using fine, vintage lace.
Luxury is really the essence of our garters and we find the element of luxury starts with a single piece of vintage lace.
Vintage lace is always exquisite in detail and adorned with beautiful patterns, such as flowers and berries or birds. The colours are always really unique too and we love to work with soft ivories and nude colours. Often, the lace we source is only enough to make one garter. This means that each garter is individually designed and truly unique.
We tend to create more traditional designs of layers of lace and bundles of soft satin ribbons but we do have a few more modern designs too.
To ensure the highest level of quality, we handcraft each garter and each one can take up to two hours to make. We even use an original vintage Singer sewing machine for some elements of the production!
Our traditional methods also allows us to make to order at no extra cost and these can be created around the colour or the lace required.
We sometimes finish the garter with a small jewel or charm and have often been asked to add people’s own jewellery for that really personal touch. We can even adorn it with a 0.5ct diamond or pearl as we believe every woman should have a little touch of luxury!
I’ve always been inspired by the great couturiers like Christobel Balenciaga,Valentino Garavani and Pierre Balmain. Their designs are truly beautiful and there are no limitations to their creativity, be it money, material or time.
The craftsmanship that goes into each design is always so exquisite and you can see it so clearly in the detail. These designs will last a lifetime, not just in quality but in style too.
